Mandy is a typical thirteen-year-old girl living a suburban middle-school life. In her spare time, she has kept a video diary. Beneath this façade however, Mandy endures a life of confusion and isolation.

The movie begins with a monologue in which Mandy speaks about suicide and the pain of adolescence. While Mandy becomes increasingly estranged from her self-absorbed parents, she also grows apart from her old friends who have become potheads. She begins a romantic relationship, only for it to fail. With the stability of her life steadily eroding away, Mandy comes to rely heavily on her best friend Josh. In the end, Mandy delivers one final monologue and abruptly turns off the camera.
